Project: Video Feedback
MFA thesis work: 2005–2006, 2007 (Revised)
This body of work is an enhanced version of straight video feedback, as it incorporates editing, pixel manipulation, and the addition of sound. The compositions depict my interest in light, pattern making, and transformation. The addition of sound heightens the videos by punctuating the transitions, creating a sense of evolution, life and elemental change. Sound relates directly to the movements and structural patterns contained in the videos. The work is ultimately about relationships, concerning technology and light working symbiotically, objective and subjective responses and placing influence over chaotic systems.

Process
- Adjust the amount of light the video camera receives by adjusting the shutter (the iris of the camera).
- Use faster hand motions to result in more data transferred to the screen.
- Digitally manipulate data using software such as Apple’s Quartz Composer or Final Cut Pro.
With any combination of these methods, I can speed up, slow down, and manipulate the data to my own desired result. The final element of my process is the introduction of sound. Sound redefines the visuals, transforming the feedback into a finalized composition. Sound is explored through the use of found sounds, field recordings and sounds from and around my environment.
